I was honored to receive the prestigious Ralph Beard Memorial Academic Award this past June, at the 2025 NLGI Annual Meeting. At this stage in my career, I find greater joy in supporting and recognizing others, as I believe such awards have the most impact when given to younger and up-and-coming professionals.
That said, Ralph Beard was a good friend and a true role model for giving back to one’s community. He often sought my input during our annual meetings about his vision for advancing tribology education, and I recall how passionate he was about establishing a program at his alma mater. Today, Auburn University hosts a thriving tribology program - thanks in large part to Ralph’s enduring efforts. I am deeply grateful for this recognition, especially one that carries his name.
